Ever been curious about what exactly a “pastor’s wife” does all day? If I’ve learned one thing in my 11 years as a pastor’s wife, it’s that I can plan how my day/week is going to go but all that can be changed in minutes with just one phone call from a church member. Typically though, Wednesdays and Sundays are fairly routine so I thought I’d start with sharing one of these “routine” days with you. Hope you enjoy!
7:00am – Rise and Shine! I know this seems like sleeping in for many of you, but I am often up past midnight so it makes 7am seem awfully early 🙂
After a last-minute shoe change, it was close to 9:30 and time to get to church! Since I had several things scheduled today and knew I’d be unable to come home in between events, I needed to take everything with me for the day. So I loaded the car with necessities for Bible study, music practice and Binky Patrol (yes, you are seeing a platter of homemade lemon bars in this picture :-)…
We typically have about 20-30 people attend on an average Wednesday. It’s a very casual setting….the attendees get to choose 3 songs they want to sing while I play the piano and then my husband teaches and the attendees can ask questions, add comments, etc. Currently, we are studying the Westminster Confession of Faith…..very interesting to dig into these deep theological tenants of our faith and it’s brought about many lively discussions!
At 11:00am, the people were dismissed and I did a quick run-through of music with our soloist for Sunday.
Usually, I then stay for about another hour and prepare the rest of the music for the upcoming Sunday service. However, today my husband and I were meeting a couple of our members for lunch. So at about 11:15am, we hurried out the door to meet them at Applebee’s.
On days like this, I’m thankful for being in a small town where everything is just a few miles away!
By the time lunch was done, it was 12:30 and I needed to get back to church to set up for Binky Patrol, which had been rescheduled from our normal Thursday schedule.
Funny-but-true story is one of the men in our church saw “Binky Patrol” in our bulletin the first Sunday he visited and thought it said “Bikini Patrol”. He wondered what kind of church this was?! Thankfully, he realized his mistake before he started spreading rumors 🙂
So what is Binky Patrol? Once a month, a group of ladies meet at our church to make blankets for children in need. We then deliver them to a volunteer from Binky Patrol who distributes them to local shelters, police stations, hospitals, military bases or wherever they are needed. Some of our blankets were even delivered to the hurricane victims Japan! It’s an amazing organization and if you want more information, here is the link to their website: BinkyPatrol.org
The ladies arrived around 1:00pm and we got straight to work. Some tied the quilts, others sewed or ironed….I usually float around wherever I’m needed for the day.
I also usually bring some kind of treat to share with the ladies….today it was lemon bars. YUM! We work really hard but always have a good time together.
Thanks to all of the prep work from our magnificent sewers, despite missing a few of our volunteers, we still managed to complete 27 blankets today! Way to go, ladies!
By 3:00pm, it was time to clean-up and get ready for my piano students that would arrive at 3:30 and 4:15pm. By 5:00pm, I was done teaching and it was time for me to head home!
After unloading my car and putting everything away, I changed clothes and it was time to take my sweet dog for his daily walk.
By 6:15pm, I was home and needed to get something put together for dinner. Even though my husband had just returned from coaching football for the last couple of hours, he said he wasn’t very hungry and requested his favorite light “dinner”…..a small bowl of strawberries and yogurt with 2 English Muffins – one with peanut butter, the other with butter and cinnamon and sugar.
It’s so nice to be married to a man that doesn’t require “meat and potatoes” every night! 🙂
Once I finished preparing his food, it was time for my last assignment of the day….editing the audio recording of today’s Bible study and uploading it to our church’s website.
By 7:30pm, I was finished for the day. Hallelujah! I grabbed a bag of popcorn and headed to the living room couch to enjoy some much needed relaxation.
Thanks for tagging along with me for the day! We’ll do it again soon 🙂
